Ready to find out about my favourite book of 2017?
Book: Turtles All The Way Down
Author: John Green
Publisher: Penguin Random House
Release date: 10th October 2017
John Green has a new book out. But you already knew that, didn’t you? To be honest, I’d be surprised if Turtles All The Way Down completely bypassed your radar. The novel’s been everywhere and was one of the most anticipated YA books of 2017. Dare I say, it was also my favourite book of the year. It ticked all the right boxes. Complex characters? Check. Stunning writing? Check. Heaps and heaps of turtles? Err… not quite. But we’ll get to that okay?
So what’s the book about?
Turtles All The Way Down isn’t actually about turtles. Surprised? Yeah, I didn’t think so. The story follows Aza Homes and her best friend Daisy as they team up to find fugitive billionaire, Russell Pickett. Russell has vanished into thin air, he’s on the run and there’s a $1000 reward at stake to find him. Daisy’s on a mission to win that reward and with her trusty sidekick in tow, the pair rekindle Aza’s friendship with Russell’s son, Davis. It’s super awkward and it doesn’t help that Aza is also living with her ever-tightening spirals of thoughts that are slowly closing in around her.
What did I think of it?
Overall, I really enjoyed the book. This is the second John Green book I’ve read and there’s something magical about the way he writes. For me the beauty of the story lies in the way John portrayed Aza’s OCD and anxiety. It was incredibly thought out, handled with care and didn’t gloss over anything or try to romanticise mental health. After reading it, I wanted to scream out that John Green gets it – whatever it may be. He knows exactly how to create characters that are so real, they’ll remind you of yourself or someone close to you. Aza was someone who will make you feel a lot less alone and I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone who spends too much time in their own head.
