One of my goals this year is to practise and create more digital art. I set the goal back in January and by watching online tutorials on YouTube and practising every day, I’m slowly starting to feel more confident about drawing using an iPad and Procreate.
The process of setting a goal and working towards it throughout the year got me thinking about other (free) ways ways that we can learn new skills as bloggers. Whether it be photography, writing copy, SEO or coding (to name a few), there might be an area that you want to improve in but lack the funds to join paid tutorial programmes such as SkillShare.
With that in mind, here are 4 free ways to learn new skills as a blogger:
1.Watch YouTube Tutorials
One of the ways you can learn new skills as a blogger is by watching YouTube tutorials. Plenty of bloggers make them and by watching and following their videos, you can grow your skillset in a fun and creative way.
Personally, I love watching YouTube videos about photo editing. Not only has this helped with my blog photography in general, but also a lot of the freelance client work I do. By watching other people discuss the ways in which they take and edit photos, it allows you to think about new things that you can do to improve yours. Some videos introduce you to new software you can try, while others offer tips and tricks you may not have thought of before such as using editing tools like Lightroom Presets or using programmes like Canva to create image-text based graphics.
2. Join Facebook Groups
Another way you can learn new skills as a blogger is by joining blog-related Facebook groups. Blog & Beyond is a great website that offers free advice on all things blogging. As well as having heaps of articles on their website, they also have a Blog & Beyond Facebook group where you can chat to fellow bloggers.
By chatting to other bloggers, you can begin to learn everyone’s blogging process. You can seek advice on topics you might not be so comfortable with, again, get introduced to tools or resources that might change or improve your blogging routine like apps that allow you to plan your Instagram feed.
3. Read Articles
Similar to watching tutorials, reading articles is another great way you can learn new skills as a blogger. Admittedly this might take slightly more time than watching a video, but there are some great in-depth articles available that offer step-by-step approaches to learning new skills. I’ve already mentioned Blog & Beyond and it’s definitely a good starting point if you’re looking for blog-related advice and tips. Medium also offers a range of different tutorials about blogging topics like a beginners guide to SEO and Instagram ‘cheat’ sheets.
4. Sign Up To Newsletters
My final tip for learning new skills as a blogger is to sign up to newsletters. This is something I’ve only recently started doing, but it’s a great way to learn new skills in a quick and easy manner. You can easily read a newsletter whilst your travelling to work or on your lunch break, and that’s one of the reasons why I love them so much. Gatto has recently started a DIY Design School newsletter that’s fantastic and a nifty way to learn branding and design tips when you have limited time available. (I’m currently seeking more newsletter resources, so if you have any suggestions, leave a comment below!)
How do you learn new skills as a blogger? Do you use any of the tips suggested above? Let me know in the comment section. Until next time.
